Meet JJ Holloway – A Homesteader's Journey from Tradition to Tinctures

Here at David's Farm Market, we pride ourselves on partnering with local vendors who share our commitment to quality, tradition, and sustainability. One such partner is JJ Holloway, a man whose roots run deep in the soil and whose passion for homesteading and natural remedies has become a way of life.

A Legacy of Self-Sufficiency

JJ’s story is one of heritage and hands-on experience, shaped by the teachings of his grandparents, who were the epitome of self-sufficiency. His grandmother, who gardened and canned her own produce up until her passing, rarely relied on store-bought goods. Her lifestyle, centered around homegrown food and wild game hunted by JJ’s biological father and later his stepfather, instilled in him a deep respect for nature’s bounty.

This upbringing set the foundation for JJ’s current homesteading practices. On his homestead, he continues the family tradition of cultivating garden beds, canning, and exploring various homesteading projects. Though retired, JJ still works a few days a week, but his true passion lies in the land and the sustainable lifestyle he has embraced.

From Care-Warrior to Herbal Enthusiast

JJ’s wife, Cynthia, is a “care-warrior” in every sense of the word. When her mother, who lived in a nursing home in Oklahoma, needed care beyond what was provided, Cynthia brought her to Tennessee. Through diligent round-the-clock care and a carefully controlled diet, Cynthia was able to wean her mother off all medications, showcasing the incredible power of natural health practices. This experience deepened JJ’s and Cynthia’s commitment to a natural way of living.

Their dedication to care extends to their beloved dog, Rigley, who they are currently nursing through health challenges. The Holloways’ love for animals and their respect for natural health solutions is evident in every aspect of their lives.

The Birth of a Homesteader's Apothecary

JJ’s journey into herbal remedies began in an unexpected place: turkey hunting. During one of his hunts, he noticed a furry plant that caught his eye. After identifying it as mullein using a phone app, JJ delved into researching its medicinal properties. What started as curiosity quickly became a passion.

Disappointed by the fact that most tinctures were being made with alcohol bases, JJ decided to take matters into his own hands. He began processing mullein into tinctures using glycerin and later expanded his craft to include salves. His first attempts were modest, but the results were anything but. The mullein plants thrived under his care, and JJ found immense satisfaction in creating something that not only honored tradition but also provided tangible health benefits.

In addition to mullein, JJ’s interest in herbal remedies was further sparked by a fellow homesteader named Kitty, who introduced him to the world of hyssop and lemon balm. Today, JJ’s garden is a testament to his love for medicinal plants, with hyssop and lemon balm flourishing alongside his other homesteading projects.
